Personalized letter from William Howard Taft, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, dated October 12th, 1928.

Written on Supreme Court stationery, folded along center line. Faint pencil marks along bottom edge. Letter reads: “Dear Lily, Was delighted to be of any assistance to you or Jack or Charley or any of your sweet family. Affectionately, Wm. H. T. Oct 12th, 1928.”

William Howard Taft (1857-1930) graduated from Cincinnati Law School (now University of Cincinnati College of Law) in 1880. He eventually served as Cincinnati Superior Court judge and US Solicitor General before assuming responsibilities as a federal court judge. Taft was appointed a judge to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in 1892 by President Benjamin Harrison. He held this position until 1900, when President William McKinley appointed him Governor-General of the Philippines. After serving one term as President of the United States from 1909-1913, Taft was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by President Warren G. Harding in 1921.
