Description

An exceptionally scarce copy of Letters between Theophilus and Eugenio, printed by Benjamin Franklin in 1747, an early product of his printing press.

Small quarto, 20 x 16.5cm, iv, 64pp, [2]. Handsomely rebound in contemporary sheepskin, title in gilt on spine with decorative bands. Contemporary end papers. Largely unblemished leaves, occasional toning, one cm stain along bottom of text block, not affecting text. (Sabin 25528) (Evans 5985) (Hildeburn 1019) (Campbell 361) From the estate of Dr. Jesse Williamson of Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia.

This work was originally attributed to Benjamin Franklin by Sabin, citing an early auction sale catalogue. Scholars have since resolved that it was written by Sir Richard Blackmore (1654-1729), who was an English poet, physician and theologian.
