First edition, second state of Mark Twain’s Life on the Mississippi.
Octavo, [1], 624pp, [2]. Brown cloth, title in gilt on spine, illustrations stamped in gilt and black on spine and front cover. Gray-tan endpapers, with ownership stamp on front free endpaper. Faint dampstain to lower left corner of text block, no impact to text. Wear to cloth at the head of the spine. Includes the frontispiece portrait and hundreds of in-text illustrations.
This is the first edition, second state, with the St. Charles Hotel depicted on page 443 and lacking the tailpiece on page 441, which was removed at the request of Mrs. Clemens, “who considered it morbid.” (BAL 3411)
