First edition, second state of Mark Twain’s Life on the Mississippi.

Octavo, 624pp. Brown cloth, title in gilt on spine, illustrations stamped in gilt and black on spine and front cover. Gray-tan endpapers, with ownership inscription dated Christmas 1884 on front free endpaper. This is the first edition, second state, with the “St. Charles Hotel” depicted on page 443 and lacking the tailpiece on page 441, which was removed at the request of Mrs. Clemens, “who considered it morbid.” (BAL 3411) An exceptionally bright, near fine copy.
