Octavo, xii, 357pp, [7]. Brown cloth, title stamped in black on the spine. Stated “First Trade Edition,” or “Second printing,” following a limited edition the same year. Top edge dyed red. Includes frontispiece portrait and 33 illustrations. In the publisher’s scarce dust jacket, light sunning to the spine, a few short closed tears, rear hinge with closed tear, a very good example. This copy is signed on the half title: “Witt Weymer / with respect and good wishes / Carl Sandburg.”

This work is divided into two parts; with the text of Part I by Carl Sandburg, and the Letters, Documents and Appendix by historian Paul M. Angle.
