Maxims in Law and Equity by William Waller Hening, published in Richmond, Virginia in 1824.
Octavo, 156, xxii, [6], 219, [1], viii, [9]-168pp. Full mottled leather, title on spine is worn and faded. Corners and edges rubbed, worn through in places. Outer hinges cracked but holding firmly, spine ends chipped. Foxing throughout, occasional pencil marks, a few untrimmed pages and tears to page edges. Previous owner’s name written on title page and rear free endpaper. Inscription on front free endpaper: “Jere. Smith’s Book: Bought of Hon. A. Kennedy, Muncietown, Ia. Sept. 20th 1843.” Andrew Kennedy (1810-1847) was a lawyer and U.S. Congressman from Muncie, Indiana who served in the House from 1841-1847. A nice example.
Three separate works bound together as one volume with a single title page. Each individual work also has its own title page: Maxims of Equity by Richard Francis (1823); The Principal Grounds and Maxims, with an Analysis of the Laws of England by William Noy (1824); and Principia Legis et Aequitatis by Thomas Branch (1824).
