A first edition of My Diary North and South by William Howard Russell. Octavo, [two volumes], xvi, 424pp; xi, [1], 442pp, [1pp ads]. Rebound in contemporary morocco, raised bands, decorative gilt compartments, title in gilt on spine. Top edge gilt. Includes large fold-out map of the United States, bound in volume I, fair condition, some separation at seams and partially detached. Some loss to bottom edge of spine in volume I. An overall very attractive copy with the scarce fold-out map. (Howes R-540) (Nevins I, Pg. 155)

Comments: William Howard Russell was a special war correspondent for the London Times, reporting on the American Civil War. It was clear in his writings that he supported the Southern cause but opposed the institution of slavery. In this work, he postulated that the southern confederacy could not be conquered.
