President Jimmy Carter served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1953, following his graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy. He specialized in submarines and was selected for the nuclear submarine program under Admiral Hyman Rickover. Carter resigned from active duty after his father’s death to manage the family peanut farm in Georgia.
