Octavo, viii, 372pp. Blue cloth, title in gilt over red on spine. Top edge stained red. No additional printings on copyright page. Toning to endpapers and text pages, light shelf wear to spine ends and bottom edge of volume. Clean text, no marks or notations. In publisher’s original dust jacket, retail price of $2.75 on front flap, bright colors, toning to flaps, light wear to spine ends and corners, vertical crease along spine, faint soiling to back panel. Business reply card from the publisher laid-in. A nice example of the author’s third novel.

Originally published in the United Kingdom in 1938, the first American edition was not published until 1946. Night and the City was the basis for the 1950 film noir of the same name, starring Richard Widmark and Gene Tierney. The film was remade in 1992 with Robert De Niro and Jessica Lange in the starring roles.
