Octavo, 336pp. Brown cloth, title stamped in gilt on the spine. Stated “First published in 1928” on copyright page. Light rubbing to tips of the spine, solid text block. Complete with 27 illustrations, including maps and diagrams, and eight plates. Lacking the scarce dust jacket. A very good example.
A collection of Gould’s essays on unexplained historical, scientific, and folkloric subjects, including the Devil’s hoof-marks, the moving coffins in the vault at Barbados, Mersenne’s numbers, Orffyreus’ wheel, the Planet Vulcan, the Berbalangs of Cagayan Sulu, and the prophecies of Nostradamus. Gould was a retired lieutenant-commander in the Royal Navy. This work was updated and reprinted numerous times.
