First edition of Old Massa’s People by Orland Kay Armstrong.

Octavo, 357pp. Light green cloth, title stamped in dark blue on spine and cover. Stated “First Edition” on copyright page. Illustrated endpapers. Solid binding, spine ends and upper corners lightly bumped, toning to spine. Light shelf wear to bottom edge of volume. Uncut fore-edge, a few pages unopened. Small piece of pages 355-356 missing, but does not affect text. In publisher’s original dust jacket, retail price of $2.50 on front flap, toning to spine, soiling to covers, chipping and tears along edges and corners. Dust jacket previously taped to jacket cover, small amount of residue on the interior of spine. Small scuff on back flap where adhesive sticker removed.

Orland Kay Armstrong (1893-1987) was a journalist, author and politician. He founded the University of Florida School of Journalism in 1925 and represented Missouri’s 6th district in Congress from 1951-1953. Old Massa’s People is based on interviews that Armstrong conducted with 206 former slaves during the 1920s.
