The titular character, Oreo, is a mixed-heritage child of a Jewish man and a Black woman, searches New York City to find her estranged father. Ross was inspired by the Greek myth of Theseus, who also sought out his father’s identity. The book is considered a “picaresque novel,” featuring a quick-witted protagonist with satirical elements.
