The first edition of Picturesque California, edited by John Muir, published in 1888, complete with 120 illustrated plates.
Large quarto, [two volumes], xii, 240pp, [2]; [2], [241]- 478pp, [1]. Full green calf, title in gilt on the spine, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Rubbing to tips of the boards, solid text block, strong hinges.
Complete with 120 tin-plates, with descriptive tissue guards, by noted artists such as Frederic Remington, Thomas Hill, Thomas Moran, etc.
This work is the first edition, “Format A,” as outlined by Currey & Kruska in “Bibliography of Yosemite.” The imprint on Volume I states: “The J. Dewing Company, Publishers / MDCCCLXXXVIII,” copyright page dated 1887; Volume II states: “J. Dewing Publishing Company,” dated 1888 on the copyright page.
