Published in 1841, “The Combustion of Coal and the Prevention of Smoke” was Charles Wye Williams’ practical study of improving the efficiency of coal-fired furnaces while reducing smoke. Williams examined the chemistry of combustion and argued for the controlled admission and thorough mixing of air with combustible gases. His work addressed one of the central industrial problems of the period: the heavy smoke produced by inefficient coal burning in factories and steam vessels. This accompanying atlas of diagrams illustrates the chemical principles for cleaner, more complete combustion of coal.
