Twelvemo, [2], 94pp, [4]. Publisher’s maroon cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine and front cover. Brown endpapers. The “State A” binding, with the publisher’s device stamped in blind on the rear cover, as described in BAL. Light rubbing to rear board. Internally clean, solid endpapers. A near fine example.

Lanier’s first collection of poetry, published during his lifetime, including Corn, The Symphony, Psalm of the West, In Absence, Rose-Morals, and other early poems. The volume helped establish Lanier’s literary reputation and preceded his appointment as lecturer at Johns Hopkins University in 1879.
