Description

The first edition, first impression of Precious Bane by Mary Webb, published in London in 1924.

Octavo, 320pp. Publisher’s green cloth, title stamped in gilt on the spine. The first impression, with no additional printings noted on the copyright page. Light offsetting to endpapers, internally clean. Solid text block. Lacking the publisher’s scarce dust jacket. Precious Bane won the Prix Femina Vie Heureuse Prize and became Webb’s best-known work.

Webb’s best-known novel, set in rural Shropshire during the Napoleonic period and narrated by Prue Sarn, whose “hare-shotten” lip shapes both her isolation and her inward life.
