Twelvemo, xix, 216pp, [18pp catalogue]. Publisher’s green embossed cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine. Complete with frontispiece plate and illustrations. Light wear to cloth along the spine. Solid text block. A few pencil notes throughout. This work is Part I, but no further parts were published under this title.
Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “To President Ed. Everett / with the high regard / of Louis Agassiz.” Everett was serving as the President of Harvard University when this copy was inscribed to him.
The recipient of this copy, Edward Everett (1794-1865), was an American scholar, diplomat, and statesman from Massachusetts. A graduate and later president of Harvard College, Everett served as a Unitarian minister, professor of Greek literature, member of Congress, Governor of Massachusetts, U.S. Minister to Great Britain, Secretary of State under Millard Fillmore, and U.S. Senator. Everett is remembered for delivering the principal two-hour oration at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery on November 19, 1863, immediately before Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address.
