A scarce printing of the Nullification Proclamation of President Andrew Jackson, delivered on December 10th, 1832, asserting the supremacy of federal law. Octavo, 17pp, [3]. Printed wrappers. Light soiling to covers from handling, some soiling to printed leaves, but overall very good condition. (Sabin 35354) A scarce pamphlet.
Comments: While nullification of federal laws at the state level was not a new phenomena in the United States, in 1832, when South Carolina attempted void tariffs which had been enacted by congress, President Andrew Jackson was forced to react. In December of 1832, he denounced nullification as unconstitutional. Troops were readied on both sides, with the federal government preparing to send troops to collect the taxes. Shortly after Jackson’s proclamation, a compromise bill was signed, greatly reducing the tariffs and averting an armed conflict. This was one of many compromises that avoided armed conflict with southern states, until the eventual civil war (Twyman-Roller, 932).
