German language broadside of Proklamation Nr. 1, issued in 1945 by Supreme Allied Command, announcing that Allied forces had entered Germany. Eisenhower states that “…we came as conquerors, but not as oppressors.”
Printed broadside, text on both sides. Measures 8.5″ x 5.75″. Pencil notation on upper right corner, “WG12” code on lower left corner. Previously folded along centerline. Statements by Roosevelt and Churchill on verso, translated into German.
A scarce piece of Allied propaganda, with only two other known examples to reach the public market.
The proclamation announced that Allied forces had entered Germany in early 1945. It established military government in occupied territory and declared the authority of the Supreme Commander. The text ordered the removal of Nazi laws and institutions, the closing of courts and schools, and the obedience of German officials to Allied Military Government orders. The statements by Roosevelt and Churchill on the verso outline future plans for the occupied Germany and their eventual return to self-determination.
