Republican Party Campaign Poster titled Protection vs Free Trade: Our Home Defenders, from the 1896 presidential election.

Chromolithograph print, which measures 16″ x 20.25″, depicts the Republican presidential ticket of William McKinley and Garret A. Hobart. The top and lower edges have been trimmed, archival tape repairs to closed tears on verso, 2 cm loss along bottom quarter. Light age toning to the overall piece. Housed in acid-free archival sleeve. This campaign item is sometimes known as the Little Red Schoolhouse Poster, for its central depiction of a country schoolhouse. An exceptionally scarce campaign poster, with noted condition issues.

The election of 1896 was a contest between Governor William McKinley of Ohio (Republican) and William Jennings Bryan of Nebraska (Democrat). The contest would be won by William McKinley and Vice President Garret Hobart. Hobart would die before completing his term, becoming the 6th vice president to die in office. McKinley would later win a second term, with Theodore Roosevelt as his running mate.
