Description
The first edition, first state of “Raise High the Roof Beams, Carpenters” and “Seymour an Introduction” by J.D. Salinger.
Octavo, [7], 248pp. Gray cloth, title in gilt on spine. Stated “First Edition” on copyright page. This is the first state, which lacks the dedication page. Includes the error “Seymore” for “Seymour” on page 173, line 13. Solid text block, light wear along spine, ownership inscription dated “August, 1963” on the front free endpaper. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $4.00 retail price on front flap, rubbing to corners, sunning to spine, a very good example.
(Starosciak, A42)
From Starosciak: “Three states have been described for this first edition. First: About thirty advance copies without a dedication page. Second: Dedication page tipped in before the first half-title page. Third: Dedication page tipped in after the title page. This is the common state.” This work was first published in 1955 in The New Yorker magazine.
