Prior to his address to the Republic Chamber, Communist Party Assembly members walked out in protest, so President Reagan began his remarks: “I’m sorry that some of the chairs on the left seem to be uncomfortable,” which drew laughter from the crowd. Ronald Reagan’s trip to Portugal was a state visit to Lisbon from May 8-10, 1985, made near the end of his broader European tour and G-7 Economic Summit. During the visit, Reagan met with President António Ramalho Eanes and Prime Minister Mário Soares, calling Portugal “a steadfast and valued ally.”
