Description

Report to stockholders of the Wise Sanitarium, Inc., birthplace of President Jimmy Carter. The hospital is now known as the Lillian G. Carter Health and Rehabilitation Center of Plains, GA.

Light soiling to document, faint dampstain to top corner, previously stapled at top left corner. Jimmy Carter was serving as the Secretary-Treasurer at the time of its sale in 1956. This report to stockholders outlines the conditions of the sale and the payout to shareholders.

It is signed and dated by Jimmy Carter, with a note that it was “Mailed to all stockholders on 1/25/57. JEC”

The Wise Sanitarium was a small rural hospital where Lillian G. Carter was trained as a nurse. On the night of October 1, 1924, Lillian Carter arrived at the hospital for the birth of her eldest son, Jimmy Carter. After sitting vacant from 1936-1956, the Wise Sanitarium was sold to E.W. Barber of Sharon, GA, who pledged to invest $35,000 to modernize the facility. The name was changed to the Lillian G. Carter Health and Rehabilitation Center in 2003.
