First edition of Martin Johnson’s Safari: A Saga of the African Blue, inscribed by the author and his wife, Osa Johnson.

Octavo, x, 294pp. Orange cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine and cover, 32 leaves of plates (including frontispiece) with 66 illustrations from the author’s photographs. Illustrated endpapers, top edge gilt. Stated “printed February, 1928” on copyright page, with no additional printings mentioned. Intermittent dampstaining and toning throughout, pages 165-184 bumped at lower corner. Spine edges rubbed, shelf wear to bottom edge, light soiling to covers, small stain at bottom of front cover. Inscribed on the flyleaf: “New York City / Nov. 6th 1928 / Dear Mr. S.D. Green – / Heres wishing you the best of African wishes from / Martin Johnson & Osa Johnson.” A very good solid copy despite issues noted.

Martin and Osa Johnson were photographers, filmmakers, authors and lecturers. From 1917 to 1936, they explored and documented areas in Africa, the South Pacific Islands and British North Borneo. Their films, photographs, papers and personal memorabilia are housed in the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum located in Chanute, Kansas.
