Seeds of Contemplation by Thomas Merton was first published by New Directions in 1949, shortly after the success of The Seven Storey Mountain, and became one of Merton’s central works on contemplative prayer and the interior life. The original 1949 text was later revised and substantially enlarged by Merton as New Seeds of Contemplation, published in the early 1960s and thereafter becoming the better-known version of the work.
