Signed copy of Selections From The Writings and Speeches of William Lloyd Garrison. Octavo, xii, 416pp. Brown cloth, embossed decorations on covers, title in gilt on spine. Yellow end papers, some separation at seam on rear end paper, Foster family bookplate affixed to front end paper. Text block is stable, but there is some separation of the the cloth at the seams. Inscribed by William Lloyd Garrison on the front end paper: “Newell A. Foster, With the high regards of his friend, Wm. Lloyd Garrison. Boston, Jan 21, 1852.” An exceptional signed copy from one of American’s preeminent abolitionists.

Comments: The recipient of this book, Newell A. Foster, was a member of the Maine State Legislator and the publisher of the Portland Press. His brother, Stephen Symons Foster, was a radical abolitionist, member of the Underground Railroad and advocate for women’s rights.
