Admiral Chester W. Nimitz signed photograph of the Japanese Surrender on September 2, 1945.
Double matte frame, blue border, black wood frame. Full piece measures 22″ x 18″. Bears a pre-printed signature on the treaty documents. Light soiling along margins of the photograph. Not examined outside of the frame.
The surrender was signed aboard the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Standing behind Admiral Nimitz are General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, Admiral William F. Halsey, and Rear Admiral Forrest Sherman.
This photograph is signed along the lower matte: “To Walter Campbell McAdoo Jr. – With best wishes and warm regards. CW Nimitz, Fleet Admiral, U.S. Navy.”
The recipient of this document was Walter Campbell McAdoo, Jr. (1897-1968), the chief of productivity for the Marshall Plan. In his private career, he was president of Sunbeam Electrical Products in Rome.
Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz (1885-1966) was the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during WWII. On September 2, 1945, he was the United States signatory to the surrender terms of Japanese forces aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. After WWII, he served two years as Chief of Naval Operations. He retired from active service in 1947 and moved to California. Admiral Nimitz died in 1966 and was buried at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California.
