John F. “Jack” McCarthy (1924-1981) was a prominent California Republican who represented the San Francisco Bay Area in the State Senate from 1950 to 1971, sponsoring the 1957 legislation that established the Bay Area Rapid Transit District. A friend and political ally of Richard Nixon, McCarthy supported Nixon’s campaigns and played a visible role in his unsuccessful 1962 bid for governor of California.
