Comments: According to Ryan: “[this work] includes not only a personal memoir of the author but is a history of the campaigns in which he participated. No more valuable, nor more interesting volumes on the Great Rebellion have been written and they are essential to the student who would gain wider knowledge on that subject.” Keifer served in the United States House of Representatives from 1877-1885 and again from 1905-1911. He was speaker of the House from 1881-1883.
