Novelist Mari Susette Sandoz was one of the 20th century’s foremost writers on Western pioneer life and the Plains Indians. Originally from Nebraska, she moved to Denver and then New York City due to her controversial writings about the people of her home state. She is best known for her biography of Crazy Horse, written from the viewpoint of the Lakota Indians, a novel concept at the time.
