Octavo, xii, 442pp. Green cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine and cover, decorative white border on cover which is worn. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece portrait of Stevenson with 45 full page illustrations of notable people mentioned in the text. Signed on the front free endpaper: “To Mr. Thomas Nelson Page, from his friend, Adlai E. Stevenson. Dec. 9, 1909.” An exceptionally rare signed book from Vice President Adlai E. Stevenson.

Adlai Stevenson served as the 23rd Vice President of the United States in the second administration of Grover Cleveland. He ran for Vice President on the William Jennings Bryan ticket of 1900, but Bryan lost to William McKinley. Stevenson was the father of Lewis G. Stevenson, the Illinois Secretary of State (1914-1917) and his grandson, Adlai Stevenson II, ran for President of the United States in 1952 and 1956. The recipient of this book, Virginia lawyer and novelist, Thomas Nelson Page, served as Ambassador to Italy in the Woodrow Wilson administration.
