The Birds of America by John James Audubon, Second Octavo Edition, complete with 500 hand-colored lithographed plates, in seven volumes.

Octavo, [7 volumes]. Contemporary brown morocco, title in gilt on spines, raised bands, decorative stamping to covers. All edges gilt. Brown endpapers, small bookseller’s label on front pastedown endpaper of each volume. Half-titles in all seven volumes. Front hinge of Volume I showing some wear, front hinge of Volume VII reinforced. Scattered light foxing to text, with negligible foxing or toning to plates. One plate with a small piece of the tissue guard attached to the illustration, two lacking tissue guards.

Complete with 500 plates by John J. Audubon, printed and colored by J.T. Bowen. (Sabin 2364) (Nissen IVB 51) All plates are bright, with vibrant color illustrations. A handsome example.

This second octavo edition was the first set to be issued after the death of John Audubon in 1851. The purpose of the octavo edition was to be available “…at such a price, as would enable every student or lover of nature to place it in his library.” While this work was destined to have future editions published, the plates were destroyed in a warehouse fire in 1871, thus limiting their publication.
