Octavo, ix, [3], 530pp. Full green cloth, title in red on spine. Orange endpapers, red topstain. Stated “First Edition” on copyright page, the first appearance of all four stories in one volume. Solid text block, touch of foxing along edges, otherwise fine. In the publisher’s dust jacket, $14.95 retail price on front flap, shelf worn, with closed tears along edges.
With a handwritten letter by Frederick “Freddy” Buechner laid-in at front, held in original mailing envelope. Full letter reads: “Dear old Nan (your phrase, not mine) / How good always to get word from you and to know you’ve been enjoying Listening to Your Life – the easiest book I’ve ever done because somebody else did it. All is well with us. Did I get to tell you before you left that our 3rd daughter (Sharmy) gave birth to our 3rd grandson (Benjamin) on Aug 26? ‘Un embarras de richesses’ as they say in Paris France. Our only trouble with all these goings-on is that I’ve sorely neglected not only my writings but doing much of anything else that might even remotely be described as useful. Judy is busy as a beaver all day long, and I mostly sit around staring into space. At present I have a loathsome head cold which at least gives me something to think about. There’s a crazy storm still going on in FL. as I write. I hope you find your house there when you arrive. Judy and I plan to hit Hobe Sound sometime late in January. Seems sun is always one of the things we look forward to most. This brings on love to the pair of you. – Freddy”
