Octavo (two volumes), xxvii, 528pp (Vol.1); x, 483pp (Vol.2). Contemporary green half calf, gilt title over black on spine, raised bands, green cloth boards, decorative gilt inlay around edges. Marbled endpapers. Two foldout maps housed in pockets at end of volumes, both near fine with toning as expected with age. Three foldout maps in Volume 1 and 44 engraved plates throughout. An attractive set.
Comments: Stanley’s exploration of the Congo region was at the request of King Leopold II of Belgium. His exploration and establishment of roads led to Belgium claiming large tracts of the countryside. Stanley’s help in establishing the Congo Free State is discussed in this book, published in 1885.
