Octavo, [2], 341pp, [1]. Publisher’s maroon cloth, title stamped in gilt on the spine. Floral endpapers. Light wear to head and heel of the spine, light soiling to boards. Bookplate on rear pastedown. Tipped in leaf before the title page, noting that this copy is for “Private Distribution / Compliments of the Author.”
Inscribed on a notecard affixed to the front pastedown: “James B. Fry / Brevet. Major General U.S.A.”
Fry’s account of the 1866 House controversy involving Roscoe Conkling, James G. Blaine, and Fry’s administration of the Provost Marshal General’s Bureau, a dispute that helped begin the long personal and political feud between Conkling and Blaine.
