First edition of The Death of a President by William Manchester, inscribed to longtime Kennedy aide and journalist, John Seigenthaler.

Octavo, xvi, 710pp. Blue cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine. Illustrated endpapers. Stated “First Edition” on copyright page. Solid text block, a fine example. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, price clipped, “0467” date code on front flap, faint dampstain to verso of back panel, a near fine example.

Signed on the half title “To the ‘Honorary Secretary of State’ on his birthday – long may he hold office. Bill / July 29, 1967.”

John Seigenthaler (1927-2014) served as a special assistant to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and later figured in the publication dispute over William Manchester’s The Death of a President, where he was among the Kennedy representatives who reviewed the manuscript and communicated edits to Manchester. Seigenthaler was the editor, publisher, and chairman of The Tennessean newspaper and the editorial director of USA Today.
