Octavo, [two volumes], xxxii, 370pp; x, 346pp. Publisher’s green cloth, title in gilt on spines, front covers stamped in blind. Complete with hundreds of illustrations, charts, and folding maps. Both volumes appear unread, solid text blocks. Small loss to page [34] in Volume I, light wear from handling along spines. In the publisher’s near fine dust jackets, scarce in any condition, light shelf wear, shallow chipping at head of Volume II, bright illustrations.
Signed by Admiral Sir Reginald Bacon on the front free endpaper of Volume I: “With the author’s best wishes. R.H. Bacon 10/4/29.”
Admiral Reginald Bacon (1863-1947) commanded the Dover Patrol from 1915 to 1917, overseeing the naval force responsible for defending the English Channel during the First World War. These volumes offer a detailed contemporary account of British naval operations in the Channel, including patrol work, minesweeping, coastal bombardment, and preparations for the Zeebrugge and Ostend operations. After his naval service, Bacon wrote extensively on naval history, including The Dover Patrol 1915-1917, The Life of Lord Fisher of Kilverstone, and The Jutland Scandal.
