From the private collection of George Lawton, this is the first edition of The Driffield Angler by Alexander Mackintosh.

12mo, x, [1], 346pp, gilt title on spine, marbled cover, half calf spine. Bookplate from previous owner (George Lawton) affixed to front end paper, with ownership inscriptions on front free end paper. Title page and frontispiece portrait are contemporary replicas, expertly bound into the volume.

Comments: George Lawton was one of the earliest American dealers in fishing supplies. He outfitted the Lewis and Clark expedition with all the fishing supplies they would need for their journey, with government records showing that they spent $25.37, equal to what the expedition spent on gunpowder.
