Designed by Daniel Berkeley Updike and printed at the Merrymount Press. In the publisher’s slipcase, lightly worn along top edge, solid binding, label on the spine.
From a limited edition of 1500 numbered copies signed by Samuel Chamberlain on the limitation page, this being number 1287.

Henry Adams privately printed The Education of Henry Adams in Washington in 1907 in an edition of only 40 copies for limited circulation among friends. He withheld the work from commercial publication during his lifetime. After his death in 1918, Houghton Mifflin issued the first trade edition that September under the copyright of the Massachusetts Historical Society. The book received the 1919 Pulitzer Prize for Biography.
