Octavo, [four volumes]. Three-quarter white vellum over decorated paper-covered boards. Gilt titles and red top edges. Housed in the publisher’s slipcase, some wear along rear panel hinges, solid binding. Designed and decorated by T.M. Cleland.
One of 1500 numbered copies signed by Cleland in the Handbook, this being number 1470.

The first three volumes contain the Essays of Montaigne. The fourth volume is a Handbook to the Essays of Michel de Montaigne. The Handbook contains Ives’s notes and comments by Grace Norton. The set was issued in two installments in December 1946 and December 1947.
