Rear Admiral Eugene B. Fluckey (1913-2007) was a U.S. Navy submarine commander during World War II, best known for his daring leadership of USS Barb (SS-220). He earned the Medal of Honor for a 1944 patrol in which he penetrated Japanese coastal waters, conducted a shore bombardment, and sank multiple enemy ships. Fluckey also received four Navy Crosses, making him one of the most decorated submariners in American history. Under his command, Barb pioneered innovative tactics, including launching rockets against land targets and deploying a landing party that destroyed a Japanese train with explosives.
