George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish author who pioneered the genre of modern fantasy. Additionally, MacDonald was a mentor to Alice in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll, who was inspired to pursue publication after hearing how much MacDonald’s children loved the story. Both the fantasy works and religious works by MacDonald are often cited as influential to numerous notable authors, including C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Madeleine L’Engle.
