The Grandissimes: A Story of Creole Life by George W. Cable was published by Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1880, after serialization in Scribner’s Monthly. (BAL 2331) Set in New Orleans immediately after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, the novel follows the Grandissime family and examines Creole society, slavery, caste, race, inheritance, and the tensions between French-Spanish colonial culture and American rule. Cable, a New Orleans native, used the historical romance form to address racial and social inequality in Louisiana, making the book one of the important early works of Southern literary realism.
