Octavo, 221pp, [3]. Publisher’s pebbled green cloth, title in black on spine. Stated “first edition” on the copyright page. Illustrated with black-and-white photographic plates and map endpapers. In the publisher’s dust jacket, $2.75 on the front flap, short closed tears to both panels, bright illustrations. A very good example.
Signed on the half-title by six World War II fighter aces: Saburo Sakai, Arthur Roger Conant, William Farrell, Joe Draper Robbins, Alexander Vraciu, and Richard Hobbs May.
Johnston’s wartime account of naval aviation in the Pacific follows Fighter Squadron VF-10, also known as the “Grim Reapers,” who fought at the battles of Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal, and the Solomon Islands.
