The History of the Union between England and Scotland by Daniel Defoe, from the private library of Sir John Henderson, Scottish nobleman and politician.

Quarto, xxiv, [2], 95pp, [1], [xxv]-xxxii, 781pp. Full period calf, title in gilt over red morocco label, raised bands. Both hinges starting, but secure. Frontispiece of Defoe. Rubbing to boards and bottom of text block. Even toning throughout. From the private library of Robert Pitcairn, as noted on the the front pastedown endpaper. Additional provenance from Sir John Henderson, 5th Baronet of Fordell, Fife. Includes his notes in pencil in the margins.

This work by Defoe was a propaganda piece for the British Crown and Government, beginning with the reign of King James I in 1606 through 1707. It was first published in 1709 as The History of the Union of Great Britain. This reissued copy from 1786 was printed over 50 years after the death of the author.
