Octavo, xxiv, 557pp. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine, illustration on front cover stamped in gilt. Top edge gilt. Complete with four maps (one folding) and twenty-one illustrations. Gray end papers, previous ownership sticker on front end paper, reinforced spine. Book is inscribed by Army Chief of Staff, Tasker H. Bliss to his son. Inscription reads: “This story showing how great states are built up, extended and preserved by brave men whose sole duty is devotion to their country, is presented to my dear son E. Goring Bliss, on this anniversary of his birth, July 2, 1910, by his loving father. Tasker H. Bliss. Brig. Gen. U.S.A., General Staff.” An exceptional association copy.
Comments: General Tasker H. Bliss served as the Army Chief of Staff during World War I. At the request of President Woodrow Wilson, Bliss was assigned to the Supreme War Council and sent to Versailles to assist in the development of the Paris Peace Conference and finally the Treaty of Versailles. He retired shortly afterwards and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. His son, Edward Goring Bliss, and recipient of this book, served in World War I and World War II, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
