First edition of The Journal of a Tour into the Territory Northwest of the Alleghany Mountains by Thaddeus Mason Harris, complete with all maps and plates.

Octavo, viii, [2], [11]-271pp. Three quarter brown leather with cloth boards, title stamped in gilt on spine, raised bands with decorative gilt compartments. Marbled endpapers. Intermittent foxing and toning throughout, not affecting text in a significant way. Untrimmed pages, which vary in size and some with ragged edges. Spine beginning to split along upper front edge, interior hinges reinforced with binding tape, overall binding is solid. Leather cracked and worn along spine and corners. Previous owners’ name label on front pastedown endpaper. Earlier owners’ names written in ink on title page and verso. Pencil notations written on front flyleaf. Three folded maps, one plan, and a folded view of the mounds at Marietta, all have foxing and toning, 2-inch tear at fold to A Map of the Alleghany Monongahela and Yohiogany Rivers. Housed in brown cloth jacket with matching slipcase, title in gilt on jacket, toning to spine with a few spots at base of spine, light shelf wear. An early travel account of Ohio containing a map of the state by Rufus Putnam dated 1804, said to be the first large folding map of Ohio.
