Octavo, xviii, 638pp. Full red calf with double gilt-ruled border on covers with florets at corners. Monogram of John Tricks Spalding on front cover in colorful leather onlays. Title in gilt over green morocco spine label, raised bands with six decorative gilt compartments. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers, decorative gilt turn-ins and board edges. Ownership inscription on half-title. Two bookplates on front endpapers, one belonging to Spalding. Two small bookseller’s labels, one being Murray’s Nottingham Book Co., Booksellers and Bookbinders. Newspaper clipping affixed to front flyleaf. Light foxing to endpapers, text block clean. An attractive example.
John Tricks Spalding (1844-1924) was a silk merchant and linen draper in Nottingham, England. He served as Mayor and Justice of the Peace of Nottingham. Following his death, Spalding’s large library, chiefly made up of topographical works, was sold by Sotheby’s in 1925.
