This copy bears the ownership inscription of William H. Holt, the first judge of the United States District Court of Puerto Rico, appointed by President McKinley in 1900.
This work by D.W. Bartlett (1828-1912) was the second book length biography of the Republican presidential candidate in 1860. It was announced by H. Dayton of New York on May 19th and released on June 4th. The first publication was released in paper wrappers, but was followed by the “Authorized Edition,” two weeks later, with various publication imprints. The Lincoln campaign authorized no campaign biographies, so this was a stretch for the publisher to claim. (Horrocks, 48)
