Inscribed association copy of The Life and Times of Hannibal Hamlin, dedicated by the author to Senator Henry L. Dawes, a lifelong friend of Vice President Hannibal Hamlin and contributor to the book.

Octavo, xi, 627pp. Blue cloth, title stamped in gilt, decorative illustrations on cover. Top edge gilt. Some rubbing to spine, wear to top edge, warping of cloth. Complete with frontispiece portrait and 16 full-page illustrations. Solid text block. Dedication letter affixed to front free endpaper from the author, grandson of Vice President Hamlin, to Senator Henry L. Dawes, gifting him a copy of the book and thanking him for his contribution. Letter is dated February 18, 1899. Partial separation along center fold, closed tear to lower panel.

Henry L. Dawes (1816-1903) was a lifelong friend of Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, serving together in the United States Senate, with Dawes representing the state of Massachusetts. Dawes is best remembered for the Dawes Act, which stripped Indian nations of their tribal lands and awarded the land to individual households of tribal members, in an attempt to westernize the native tribes of the United States. Dawes died in 1903.
